A Lifesaver
For me, augmentative and alternative communication has been a lifesaver. There is no way that I could have gotten where I am today without this technology. I managed 22 years without AAC intervention. At times, I wonder how different my life would be if I had access to AAC all that time. Then, I think that was then and this is now.
As a result of determination and AAC, I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in social work and an MBA. The technology also helped me become a DynaVox Consumer Representative and an AmeriCorps ASSET Navigator. Currently, I am in my second and final year of service as an Assistive Technology Navigator at United Cerebal Palsy of Greater Houston. I demonstrate a variety of devices and computer programs that assist those with speech, mobility, and visual impairments.
I can definitely say the last 15 years were much easier than the first 22.

Right on, Tasha! There is a bit of lag, but as Navigators we can help with the catch-up. I’m finding “consumers” that are now well on in their lives that don’t know what has been available or where or how to get it. You are doing awesome work and are an inspiration. Keep up the getting things done!
I agree with Donnie. You are an inspiration.
