Measuring Success

How do we measure success? There are several attributes by which society measures success – level of income, where one lives, or whether or not one is married with children. For AAC users, success is measured in a totally different manner.  For example, a new user’s success may be as simple as putting together a complete sentence. For a veteran user, it may be giving his or her first public presentation.  Success is measured in accomplishments and is different for every AAC user.

Do I consider myself a success? Yes I do. I went from being a special education student to earning my MBA. Not many people have accomplished that feat in life. Professionally, I’m a work in progress. I have a long standing relationship with DynaVox Mayer-Johnson. However, it has been difficult for me to find a full time permanent position. My post as the Assistive Technology ASSET Navigator for United Cerebal Palsy of Greater Houston will end in August. I will need to find another full time job at that time. Although I have challenges ahead I am up to them.  Nothing I have achieved so far would have been possible without AAC.
