Look What I Did!
The school team working with Evan has made another great move to make his device a powerful tool for him both in and out of the classroom!
A few weeks ago, the school classroom hosted a sharing night where students were to make presentations to their peers and families showcasing the work and special projects they’ve completed so far this year. This annual event is set up so that the students return to school around 7pm with their families and go to their classrooms to present the projects they’ve worked so hard to complete. What a fun way for them to showcase what they’ve learned and strengthen the connection between home and school!
Due to a scheduling conflict, Evan and his family were unable to come to the sharing night. His teacher didn’t want Evan to miss out on the fun or the chance to show his family what a successful year of accomplishment this has been. So, in the days prior, Evan and a few of his friends recorded mini videos where he would hold up some favorite projects and highlight some favorite parts of what he had done. His friends helped him a bit with describing the projects. Once the videos were filmed, his teacher connected the videos to a pop up in his DynaVox V device. Each button was labeled with the project name and the name of the friend appearing in that clip.
When Evan was able to go home and share the video clips with his family, his pride was evident. His mom reported that this was an incredible way for him to share not only what was important to him in terms of his class work, but also powerful images of the people who mean so much to him as well.
What an extraordinary way to take advantage of the power in the DynaVox V with a little creativity! This devoted teacher and class of students helped give Evan a new way to communicate with his family and narrow the gap between home and school.
