Using the Past to Create a Future

As I look at the past, I am thinking about the future. Currently I am an intern at DynaVox Mayer-Johnson.  Like many things that I’ve done in the past, as part of my internship I am doing a lot of awareness with the able-bodied community to help them understand that they should not be scared when they are around people with disabilities. I take this responsibility very seriously and it is very exciting work!

But in the past I’ve done much, that when combined with my education and the skills I am honing now, that will help me achieve my dreams in the future. I have been a consumer representative for DynaVox since 2002. In this role, I test new software, and go to national trade shows and demonstrate how DynaVox products work.

I have also worked as a counselor at Camp Chatterbox, a camp for kids who use augmentative and alternative communication.  This experience was awesome and it was great to be able to not only encourage kids, but also to teach parents what their children can do. Chatterbox parents still email me for advice, and, of course, I’m always happy to help.

I have no idea what I want to do with my future, but I think that I might eventually like to start a camp for people with and without disabilities. I also would like to do as much awareness as I can. My current and past experience at DynaVox and my Camp Chatterbox experience should help me.
