What Works for You?

Every AAC user has his or her own way of communication. It is up to each of us, as AAC users, to find, maintain, and explore easier ways to communicate using our device.  This cannot be achieved alone. A person can achieve this necessary goal from a support system of family, co-workers, and friends. The key is to communicate effectively to get the best quality of life.

Speaking from experience, it took some time to get where I am today. I have had three difference AAC devices, all of which served me well at the time. My laptop with the DynaVox software installed was just what I needed my last two years in college. I had the ability to communicate with my professors and friends. Not to mention, I had the computer that I sorely needed to complete all my papers. Furthermore, the DynaMyte 3100, which I still have, suited my needs well during my internship at the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, now called the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services or DARS. It was very light and portable. As an intern, I went on home visits with counselors. Thus, having the DynaMyte 3100 was very beneficial to me. Lastly, my current device, the DynaWrite, allows me communicate with ease to my co-workers. It has the ability to store all my presentations and speak clearly when I need it as my second voice.

To say the least, without this technology, my life would be vastly different. It was up to me to change it and find what works. I could not have received my first or second device without the help of DARS.  The old saying is true “If you’re not careful life will pass you by”.  So, it’s up to you as a fellow AAC user to find what works for you.
